Family Day 2025: Time for family, friendship and fun!

February may be the coldest or second coldest month in Alberta ~ it competes for that record with January ~ but that’s no excuse to stay at home, just waiting for the shorter days and colder weather to disappear.

Family Day is on Monday, February 17, and in a community that knows how to have fun, from February 8 to February 17, many Frost-Fest and Valentine’s Day activities are planned in the Slave Lake area.

Family Day in Canada started in Alberta in 1990 and has been adopted by other provinces over the years. However each of us defines family, whether the one we were born into, adopted into or one we selected as adults, the sentiment is the same — families, along with our friends, are at the core of our emotional well-being and give us the stability we need in a constantly changing world.

We all need people to call on when times get tough or celebrate when we do something well. And the added benefit is that strong relationships often translate into stronger communities. Feeling supported by those closest to us fosters a more positive attitude and a belief in contributing to our community and developing social networks that reduce isolation and boost people’s well-being.

On behalf of all Vanderwell employees and the Vanderwell family, we hope everyone who lives in the Slave Lake area and across Canada finds time to enjoy Family Day with friends and family.

Happy Family Day!
