Coming Together in Uncertain Times

As we begin a new year here in Slave Lake, it’s hard to ignore the uncertainty that seems to surround us. Global tensions, shifting trade policies, U.S. tariffs and duties, and the continued pressure of a high cost of living are affecting families, businesses, and communities across Canada.

At Vanderwell, we feel it too. Markets fluctuate, costs rise, and planning for the future can feel more complicated than ever.

Yet if there is one thing forestry has taught us, it’s patience and perspective. Trees grow through storms, droughts, and long winters. They endure because they have a strong foundation, and because they grow together.

Slave Lake has always been a place that understands resilience. We’ve faced wildfires, economic downturns, and hard seasons before. Each time, what carried us through wasn’t just hard work, it was community. Neighbours checked in on one another. Volunteers stepped up. People found small, meaningful ways to help, even when times were tough for themselves.

That spirit matters now more than ever.

While none of us can control global trade disputes or rising prices on our own, we can control how we show up for the people around us. Making a positive difference doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive. Sometimes it’s as simple as checking on a neighbour, asking a friend how they’re really doing, or offering to lend a hand.

Here in the Slave Lake area, there are many organizations quietly doing important work and they rely on community support. Volunteering your time or skills can make a real impact at places like:

These organizations help ensure that no one has to face hardship alone, whether it’s food insecurity, family challenges, access to education, or support during difficult moments.

Hope isn’t about pretending things are easy. It’s about choosing to act with care and kindness, even when things are hard. It’s about remembering that strong communities are built one small gesture at a time.

At Vanderwell we’ve been here for more than 80 years, we’re proud to be part of Slave Lake.

We believe in this community, in the people who live and work here, and in the power of looking out for one another.

If we each do our part, however small it may seem, we can help make our corner of the world a steadier, kinder place in the year ahead.

On behalf of all Vanderwell family members, employees and contractors, we wish you and your loved ones the best in 2026!
